Every cottage garden should include this

mounding plants for natural support. Long
blooming and available in many colors.
Reseeds prolifically if it is happy with
the site. Prefers a dry, infertile soil,
but performs very well in richer
locations.

|
HEIGHT:
18" - 3 ft. x equal spread
|
|
COLORS:
Deep purple, lilac or white.
|
|
COMMENTS:
Performs best in soil high in organic
matter. Water moderately and fertilize
monthly but good drainage is essential,
and allow soil to dry out between
waterings. Give container plants light
shade. Very fragrant, so plant in volume
to provide a perfumed garden. Pinch out
young plants frequently to encourage a
dense, bushy habit. Slow to develop,
therefore, the largest, healthiest
starters are best.
Heliotrope 'Simply
Beautiful'
'Baby
Blue'
from Ball (2003) has purple/blue blooms,
is highly fragrant and compact.

COMMENTS:
A favorite long-bloomer for attracting
butterflies, and a perennial in Zone 8 and
higher. Perfect for the summer border, in
pots or containers, or spilling over from
window boxes. Because of their woody
stems, they can be standardized into small
trees. Many named varieties are available
and some are:
L. x hybrida 'Dallas red' has
orange/yellow/red tricolor blooms turning
to deep red.
L. x hybrida 'Festival'. Red and
yellow blooms.
L. x hybrida 'New Gold' (2 ft. x 4
ft.). Solid yellow blooms.
Lantana montevidensis
'Lavender
weeping'
(6"
- 1 ft.), has verbena-like, fragrant,
purple flowers with a white eye.
Also look for the Lantana 'Morning Glow'
series, introduced early 2000 and have an
improved mounding habit that requires less
pinching to produce a great container. The
colors are: orange/yellow,
pink/yellow,
rose/gold,
vanilla/yellow
and yellow.
