COMMENTS:
Long blooming providing they are fertilized
regularly, these daisylike flowers have bright
yellow centers and oblong, deep green, 1- to
2-inch, rough-textured leaves. All asters are
valuable, hardy plants, thriving in any
well-drained soil. The most vigorous are best
lifted every year, and two or three strong side
shoots replanted. Large and better blooms will be
obtained by planting selected single shoots and
training them like a single stem of a
chrysanthemum. Old or large clumps throw up a dozen
or more flowerstalks which complete for space and
light. Because they are so easily grown, gardeners
tend to treat them casually, but few perennials
will respond well to kindly attention and good
feeding as the aster.
