COMMON:
Speckled bellflower
June-
Rosy red, white or purple
COMMENTS:
This vigorous Japanese cultivar has
2-inch-long, bell-shaped flowers edged and tipped
with white. It produces a continuous profusion of
blooms in early to midsummer if deadheaded, and is
called 'Speckled bellflower' because the blooms are
often speckled with red. Once established, it
spreads aggressive by underground rhizomes and will
steal space from less aggressive perennials. When
the clump becomes larger than desired, dig it up
and divide, which will probably be necessary every
third or fourth year. Provide a fertile moist soil.
There are many varieties available. Some are:
C. punctata 'Flashing Lights' has variegated
green and white foliage set with large pendulous,
lilac bell flowers.
C. punctata 'Pantaloons'
is an unusual variety with very unique blooms. The
light purple tubular bells are double! One bell
seems to be growing out of another.
C. punctata 'Rubra' is an older variety with
large, dusty rose tubular bell flowers.
