COMMENTS:
Vigorous and invasive climbers which provides
quick coverage of walls, fences and trellis once
the plant is established, which can take 3 to 4
seasons. Hardy and trouble free, it bears masses of
trumpet-shaped flowers in 3-inch clusters which are
lavishly produced all summer, followed by bright
green, 6- to 8-inch long beanlike seed
pods.
If the pods are left on over winter, finch will
break them open and greedily eat the seeds inside.
Prune to shape in the fall. Provide a deep, average
soil enriched with humus or compost. Keep moist
especially during the first few seasons until it is
established. As the vines grow as thick as an arm
over the years, be sure to provide a very strong
trellis or fence. The vines will snap weak wood.
Eradication is difficult. It took me 4 years to
totally remove an 8 year old unwanted plant.
