COMMENTS: These are the mums which are sold each fall. If you keep them in the container, after blooming plant them in the garden in a sunny location, cut the woody stalks off to soil level, and they should return the following year. This adaptable perennial transplants readily, even in full bloom. It is also adaptable to a variety of soils. All types have thick, cleft foliage up to 3-inches long with semiwoody stems. While described as winter hardy, many types are not, even if heavily mulched. Pinching back the stems until mid-July promotes compactness and additional plants as the pinched off cuttings, stripped of most of the bottom foliage, root easily if first dipped in a rooting compound then set in trays of moistened builders sand mixed with peat moss. Every type appreciates constant moisture and a loose summer mulch. Taller varieties benefit from early staking.
