BOTANICAL:
Clematis
montana maximowicziana (syn: C. terniflora)
(prev: C. paniculata)
PRONOUNCED:
KLEM-uh-tiss MON-tah-nuh
maks-im-oh-wiks-ee-AY-nuh
September
- Creamy white
COMMENTS:
Unusual in that it blooms so late in the year,
and grows very large, loves high, cold, dark walls,
and is very fragrant. The plant covers itself with
white petaled, 1/4-1/2 inch blooms with very
prominent yellow stamens. To keep its growth in
check, prune to desired shape in the fall after it
has flowered. The alternative is to leave it alone
until it gets out of hand, then cut the whole
tangle of stems back but with the risk that
you may kill the plant instead of rejuvenating it.
Provide a hole at least 18-inches deep and as wide
and filled with rich, humusy soil. Keep moist and
feed often until well established. Very fast
growing. Mine grew 4 feet in the first season, and
was at least 12 foot tall the following year.
Clematis can be grouped into three types.
