PRONOUNCED:
hel-EE-nee-um aw-tum-NAH-lee
COMMON:
Sneezeweed
August
- Yellow, copper orange or red.
COMMENTS:
Very valuable in the border during late summer
and fall when they can be relied upon to provide a
vivid splash of color. They are most accommodating
and easy to grow. The taller varieties can be
pinched back when the new growth is about 2 ft.
tall to reduce their overall height and induce
greater branching. Provide a consistently moist,
average soil. Rich soil can produce overly tall,
weak plants and plant in groups of 3 for the best
effect. The common name, sneezeweed, is so called
because Native Americans used its dried petals to
prevent hay fever. Suggested cultivars:
H. autumnale 'Goldene Jugend' ('Golden
Youth'), 36", has deep yellow flowers.
H. autumnale 'Butterpat' has bright yellow
flowers.
